Copyediting
Sentence-level editing for grammar, clarity, and style
You know your research inside and out. But turning complex ideas into clean, readable prose—that's a different skill. Copyediting takes care of the sentence-level work: fixing grammar, sharpening the language, and rescuing awkward phrasings. The goal is to make your writing clear and professional so you can focus on the technical aspects of your work.
There are plenty of editing agencies out there, and most assign your work to an anonymous editor whom you’ll never get to know. I work differently: when you hire me, you’ll work with me. I’ll be in touch before, during, and after your edit. And I’ll be cheering you on when your work succeeds!
I offer copyediting at two levels depending on how much attention your document needs.
Light copyediting makes your writing mechanically correct. This includes correcting grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, as well as identifying any unclear passages or incomplete sentences that need your review. I also review all documents for accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive language.
Light copyediting is a good fit if your writing is already fairly clean and you need a final pass to catch errors before submission.
Standard copyediting includes everything at the Light level, plus work on clarity and style: improving academic tone and ensuring your language fits your audience, reducing wordiness and overly complex sentences, and marking areas where words or explanations are unclear or imprecise.
Standard copyediting is the right choice if you need both correctness and clarity—if your writing needs both error-fixing and improved flow and readability.
Add-on services are available to meet specific project needs, and are priced individually based on your document’s complexity:
Consistency check to ensure consistent formatting of abbreviations, acronyms, units, equations, and numbering throughout your document
Citation editing to ensure your citations are formatted consistently and match your required style
Bibliography generation to create or format your reference list
Style guide formatting to meet specific journal or institutional requirements
Table of contents generation
… and more (if you need something not listed here, just ask!).
What you receive
All copyediting work includes in-text revisions using Track Changes, marginal comments explaining notable changes and flagging areas for your review, and a summary sheet identifying major patterns and common errors.
Working with me means you get more than just a marked-up document: I’ll stay in touch with you until you’re satisfied with your writing. Clarifications on my edits and comments are always free, and I offer a 50% discount for editing subsequent drafts as you revise. This isn't a one-and-done transaction—I'm here to support you throughout the revision process.
